ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons Claims Gillette Offered $1 Million to Shave Beards for an Ad

Date:

Introduction: A Million-Dollar Beard Dilemma

Billy Gibbons, the iconic guitarist of ZZ Top, has revealed an intriguing and humorous story about a million-dollar offer he and the late Dusty Hill received from Gillette. The razor company proposed paying them $1 million each to shave off their signature long beards for a commercial. For decades, ZZ Top’s beards have been an inseparable part of their image, and the band’s decision to reject this lucrative offer speaks volumes about their commitment to their identity and legacy.

The Million-Dollar Offer

In a candid interview on the Mohr Stories podcast, Gibbons shared the details of the unexpected offer from Gillette. “It’s true. [Gillette] deny it. It was a million dollars per man,” he said. Despite the massive financial incentive, Gibbons and Hill decided against accepting the offer. Gibbons recounted the conversation they had with music executive Bob Merlis about the deal.

“We called Mr. Merlis. I said, ‘Bob, we got this offer.’ ‘What?’ I said, ‘We’ve been offered a million dollars each to shave on TV.’” Merlis responded with a mix of humor and practicality: “Well, the money’s good. You might as well consider doing it, but I’m not so sure you guys know what’s under there.”

Ultimately, Gibbons and Hill chose to pass on the offer, holding firm to their trademark look that had become a symbol of their band. “We passed. We passed, and our fans loved it. Word got out,” Gibbons added, highlighting the deep connection the band had with their audience, who strongly associated ZZ Top with their iconic beards.

Dusty Hill’s Legacy and Passing

The story of the Gillette offer is a lighthearted chapter in the band’s history, but it also serves as a poignant reminder of the passing of one of ZZ Top’s foundational members, Dusty Hill. In July 2021, Hill passed away in his sleep at the age of 72. His death was a huge loss to the band and to the music world, as Hill had been integral to ZZ Top’s signature sound and image.

Following his passing, Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard issued a heartfelt statement, paying tribute to their late bandmate: “We are saddened by the news today that our compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, TX.” They expressed deep gratitude for Hill’s years of commitment to the band, acknowledging his lasting influence on the group’s iconic sound and their place in rock history.

Paying Tribute to Dusty Hill

In the wake of Hill’s death, ZZ Top continued to honor his memory with a series of emotional performances. Just days after Hill’s passing, Gibbons and Beard decided to carry on with their planned concert, a decision that resonated deeply with their fans. During the performance, Gibbons introduced Elwood Francis, who had been chosen to replace Hill. “We’re gonna have a good time in here tonight. Got a new guy up here, as you know. Dusty gave me the directive,” Gibbons said, as he welcomed Francis to the stage.

Gibbons later praised Francis for stepping in seamlessly, noting, “How about that Elwood, tearing up that bottom there for Dusty.” This tribute to Hill highlighted the enduring bond between the members of ZZ Top, as well as their dedication to keeping the band’s spirit alive in Hill’s absence.

Conclusion: The Unbreakable Bond of ZZ Top

Though Dusty Hill is no longer with them, ZZ Top continues to carry on his legacy and honor his memory. The humorous story about the Gillette offer to shave their iconic beards serves as just one of many memorable moments in the band’s history. ZZ Top’s refusal to change their image for money reflects their deep integrity and the authentic connection they’ve built with their fans over the years.

The partnership between Gibbons, Hill, and Beard, which defined the band’s sound and success, remains a lasting testament to the power of friendship, music, and shared vision. As ZZ Top moves forward, Hill’s influence and legacy will continue to resonate through their music, ensuring that his impact will not be forgotten.
